Fatal Pedestrian Crash, Hit and Run

Detectives from FCPD Crash Reconstruction and Auto Crimes Enforcement Units are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash after the driver of a stolen vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian.

Sunday, March 10, at 12:17 a.m., officers were searching the Hybla Valley area for a vehicle that was stolen overnight on Mar. 9 from the 7900 block of Sausalito Place. An officer saw the stolen black 2015 Hyundai Sonata on Buckman Road near Russell Road. The driver of a stolen Sonata sped away at the sight of the police. Officers did not pursue.

Approximately 15 minutes later, an officer saw the stolen vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Janna Lee Avenue towards the dead end. The driver sideswiped an occupied vehicle near Tamarind Street. Officers followed the direction the driver was traveling and located the stolen vehicle crashed into a dumpster and unoccupied.

Officers then found a struck pedestrian in the grass nearby. James Johnson, 63, of Hybla Valley was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Officers saturated the area but were unable to locate the driver. There is no description of the driver at this time.

Preliminarily, Crash Reconstruction detectives determined the driver of the stolen vehicle sideswiped a vehicle on Janna Lee Avenue and struck Johnson in the roadway on Janna Lee Avenue before crashing into the dumpster. Auto Crimes Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Gun Store Burglary in Hybla Valley

Detectives from FCPD Criminal Investigations Bureau have obtained warrants for one man in connection with yesterday’s gun store burglary in Hybla Valley.

Yesterday afternoon, detectives were alerted that a man was arrested at the New Carrollton Metro station by Metro Transit Police. The man was in possession of one of the handguns stolen in the Hybla Valley gun store burglary. Detectives obtained warrants for the 22-year-old man on one count of Burglary, one count of Destruction of Property, and six counts of Grand Larceny of a Firearm. The man is currently being held on charges in another jurisdiction and will eventually be extradited to Fairfax County.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Bailey’s Crossroads

Detectives from FCPD Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist that occurred in Bailey’s Crossroads.

Sunday, March 10 at 11:10 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Leesburg Pike and Glen Carlyn Drive for a crash involving a 1996 Yamaha motorcycle and a 2000 Acura sedan.

Preliminarily, detectives determined the driver of the Acura was traveling westbound on Leesburg Pike attempting to make a left turn onto Glen Carlyn Drive when he was struck on the passenger side by the motorcyclist which was eastbound on Leesburg Pike in the left through-lane.

The motorcyclist, Alejandro Portillo, 19 of Arlington, was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Acura remained on scene and was uninjured. Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives continue to investigate the crash.
